In this course, students will learn about the history of Social Work. They will come to understand how our personal values shape our beliefs and attitudes and they will begin to examine their own values, beliefs and attitudes as these relate to social service work. They will develop an understanding of our Canadian political system at a basic level and how it impacts the work we do in social agencies. Students will become familiar with some of the historical, theoretical and philosophical frameworks that impact social service work today. Foundational skills and various fields of social work practice will be examined. There will be a focus on helping the students to learn about community agencies.
