USP 1110   Fundamentals of Scanning   Credits: 3

In this course, students will develop critical thinking skills required in screening, preparing and assessing the ultrasound patient. Through lecture, and simulation of patient interactions, students will examine topics of legalities, identification, consent, and clinical history acquisition, and patient management skills. Students will develop a working knowledge of the verbal and non-verbal interactions with patients and other hospital personnel. During the Lab component, students will also demonstrate proper body mechanics and patient transfers used in diagnostic imaging. Patient monitoring, infection control and isolation technique will be discussed. Students will gain awareness of the appropriate sonographers' response to emergency situations. Through scheduled self directed learning, students will study medical terminology and definitions of other diagnostic modalities and tests. This is a core course in the Diagnostic Medical Sonogaphy program.
