DSW 2317   Disability and Communication Systems   Credits: 3

In this course, students will learn strategies suited to the unique needs of children and adults with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities & acquired brain injury who have limited communication skills. Students will learn basic skills in the use of manual signs and natural gesture to support communication and encourage and support language development in children and adults with communication difficulties. Students will also learn the principles of developing and using a variety of picture communication symbol tools. Students will also examine other forms of communication such as Braille, Makaton, Bliss Symbolics and Amerindian Gestural Code.
