The focus is on major periods and movements in art, their chronology, and the new role the modern artist plays in comparison to the old masters, as well as preclassical artists. All artists must develop an awareness of the major aesthetic achievements of the past in order to situate their own and others' work in the historic continuum. The course concentrates on the major achievements of western visual art with a focus on comparing and discussing them in relation to modern and contemporary periods and approaches.
